'No Free Lunch'

Hi All
AoC is about to launch a ‘No Free Lunch?’ campaign - calling on the Government to extend free meals for 16-18 year olds from a disadvantaged background who study at College (like their school sixth form counterparts).
A petition has been set up on the no.10 website and we would really appreciate if you could take a moment to sign it and circulate it to colleagues to sign. The link can be found here:
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/31069
The more people that sign this, the more chance we have of raising this issue widely.
You can also follow the campaign on…

Come clean- SU letter to the Principal

RE: Hidden Course costs

Dear Dr Birkinshaw,

Every year, students at York College find themselves out of pocket by having to pay for extra resources and activities in order to carry out their studies. These ‘hidden costs’ are on top of any tuition fees and are often not advertised to students when they apply for a course. Students at York College think this is unfair and ask you to commit to the following:

Advertise all course costs at the point of application
Students should be told how much it will cost to complete their course before they apply for it.…

Strike Action

Statement regarding Industrial Action 30th November

York College Students’ Union support the sentiments behind the Industrial Action on the 30th November as poor pensions would undermine staff morale in the College and discourage high quality staff from remaining in or joining the Educational profession, furthermore impacting on teaching and learning and the best student experience within the College.

This unfair Pensions deal also discourages our students from joining public sector professions, something which we believe would be detrimental for hundreds of aspiring doctors, nurses, teachers and other public sector workers in the College.

We are concerned that the Government’s uncooperative…

As President, I really want to see The Student Union getting up and around College. We typically wear our Student Union hoodies around College with the name of roles on the back of the hoodie. We’re also around College with our Meet the exec stalls where you can come talk to us, ask any questions and find out more about what we can do for you as…

General Update

I just thought I would give everyone an update on the Unions recent activities and happenings. It was a very productive few weeks leading up to Christmas. We helped with the organisation of the EMA campaigns around college, including the “Holding On To Our Education” . I also did a live radio interview for BBC Radio York regarding this issue. I also went down to London for a meeting with Andy Burnham (MP), to put across the stories and opinions you gave us. The “EMA Fix It, Back It” card campaign we ran, had over 200 responses. Thank you for…

SAO Weekly Update

I would like to start the blog with a big thank you to all those who help raised funds for this years Children In Need. The college in total raised around £1400, and the Students Union raised around £300 of that.

I’m not liking the weather this week, some people are enjoying it, I’m really not. Snow is horrible stuff, looks nice, but causes traffic back logs and places inaccessible.

The big campaign this week is to save the EMA scheme. We have adapted the NUS Fix It, Back It campaign, to a postcard. We are asking you to put…

SAO Weekly Update

It was quite hectic last week. Trying to balance college work along side SU work is hard work, but worth it. The biggest news last week in the office was the NUS Demo. It was a major event, set up to protest the rise in student fee’s. Unfortunately there was a small minority who let the others down. York College SU does not condone the behaviour by these people, it was unnecessary and criminal.

Besides the demo there was other things happening for us. Genie, Tasha and I had an introductory meeting with Deb Fowler, who I will be working…
